PTSD therapy
Healing from PTSD and C-PTSD is possible.
PTSD therapy can help when you feel like you're constantly on edge, unable to escape the memories of what happened. You might find yourself reliving the traumatic event through flashbacks, struggling with nightmares, or feeling disconnected from the people and activities you once loved. The hypervigilance, the emotional numbness, the sense that danger is always lurking—these aren't signs of weakness. They're your nervous system's way of trying to protect you from a threat that has already passed.
At Full Vida Therapy, our team understands that post-traumatic stress disorder affects every aspect of your life, your relationships, your work, your sense of safety in the world, and your connection to yourself, which is why we offer compassionate PTSD therapy to help you move forward. We specialize in providing evidence-based, trauma-informed PTSD therapy to individuals throughout California through secure virtual sessions. Our therapists create a compassionate space where healing isn't just possible—it's the focus of everything we do.
What Is PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. While it's natural to feel distressed after something frightening or dangerous happens, PTSD occurs when those feelings don't fade over time and begin to interfere with your daily functioning.
Trauma that can lead to PTSD includes:
- Serious accidents such as car crashes, workplace injuries, or other sudden incidents
- Physical or sexual assault
- Natural disasters like earthquakes, fires, or floods
- Sudden loss of a loved one
- Witnessing violence or harm to others
- Combat or military experiences
- Medical trauma such as life-threatening illness, invasive procedures, or traumatic childbirth
- Childhood abuse or neglect that continues to impact you in adulthood
What distinguishes PTSD from typical stress reactions is that the symptoms persist for weeks, months, or even years after the traumatic event. Your mind and body remain stuck in survival mode, reacting as though the danger is still present even when you're safe.
Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of PTSD
PTSD manifests differently for each person, but mental health professionals generally categorize symptoms into four main clusters:
Re-Experiencing Symptoms
These involve involuntarily reliving the traumatic event:
- Intrusive memories that feel like they're happening right now
- Flashbacks where you feel transported back to the traumatic moment
- Nightmares related to the trauma that disrupt your sleep
- Intense physical or emotional reactions to reminders of the event, such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, or panic
- Distressing thoughts that you can't control or push away
Avoidance Symptoms
To cope with the distress, you might try to avoid anything associated with the trauma:
- Avoiding places, people, or activities that remind you of what happened
- Steering clear of conversations about the traumatic event
- Pushing away thoughts or feelings connected to the trauma
- Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy
- Isolating yourself from friends and family
Negative Changes in Thoughts and Mood
PTSD can fundamentally alter how you think about yourself, others, and the world:
- Persistent negative beliefs about yourself ("I'm broken," "I can't trust anyone")
- Distorted thoughts about the cause or consequences of the trauma, often leading to self-blame
- Persistent feelings of fear, horror, anger, guilt, or shame
- Emotional numbness or feeling detached from your emotions
- Difficulty experiencing positive emotions like happiness, love, or satisfaction
- Memory problems, particularly around the traumatic event
- Feeling alienated from the people closest to you.
